Lund, Sweden – SmiLe company Saveggy has developed a completely new technology that protects fresh cucumbers from dehydration, oxidation and microorganisms, thereby extending their shelf life. Now Saveggy receives a Eurostars grant of SEK 5 million from the EU organization Eureka to expand its concept to more fruits and vegetables.

Saveggy has developed a coating in a fossil-free and edible material that is sprayed on the cucumbers. The company´s coating consists of food-grade and naturally produced ingredients.

The new EU Eurostars grant will enable Saveggy to adapt its technology to protect other fresh foods and extend their shelf life. Saveggy will work in collaboration with the companies Arborea Bio Foods from Portugal and Thorverk from Iceland.

“I’m thrilled that we will now have the chance to develop the third generation of our coating. Our technology has the potential to revolutionize logistics chains and handling of fruit and vegetables in Europe. Our aim is to protect fresh foods that currently have no protection, thereby significantly extending their shelf life,” says Vahid Sohrabpour, CEO of Saveggy and one of the founders.

The company is preparing to launch the treated cucumbers next year in collaboration with the ICA supermarket chain and the Odlarlaget producer organization for fruits and vegetables.
