SmiLe Incubator is the first business incubator to sign an agreement to support Sweden’s participation at Expo 2020 in Dubai. The agreement was signed with the Expo 2020 committee that was specially appointed by the Swedish government. SmiLe will participate as an “official organization” and support certain initiatives in the Swedish pavilion.
The 2020 World Expo in Dubai, which will be held between October 2020 and April 2021, will be the Swedish government’s single largest export and investment promotion initiative.
The theme of Expo 2020 is “Connecting Minds, Creating the Future.” The arrangers expect that 190 countries will participate and that the World Expo will have 25 million visitors. Over several weeks, which have not yet been determined, the world exhibition will have a life science focus.
Official organizations that have decided to participate to date, besides SmiLe Incubator, are Business Sweden, Svenska Institutet, Swecare, Teknikföretagen, Tillväxtverket, Vinnova, Visit Sweden, Esportal, Hack for Sweden and Make Trade. In this context, official organizations are defined as “companies and regions that support Swedish participation through collaboration.” Other organizations and companies provide support through various types of funding and sponsorships.
The purpose of the Swedish pavilion is to showcase and thereby strengthen Sweden's attractiveness for investors and for innovation exchange, to promote Sweden as a knowledge nation, and to strengthen the competitiveness and creativity of the business sector. The Expo has three subthemes: opportunity, mobility and sustainability. The 2,500-square meter Swedish pavilion will focus on sustainability.
“Sweden has many innovative companies; a large number come from Lund University and many of those that are in the life sciences are with us at SmiLe. We prioritize internationalization initiatives, for which reason this is an outstanding opportunity to showcase our incubator companies at the World Expo along with the rest of Swedish industry,” says Ebba Fåhraeus, CEO of SmiLe Incubator.
“I’m glad that SmiLe is involved with Expo 2020 as the first incubator. The life sciences are important for Sweden economically and for patients worldwide to receive better treatment in the future. SmiLe and Lund comprise a sustainable and creative center for this and we can offer the world investment opportunities in tomorrow’s medical care,” says Anders Lönnberg, Commissioner General for Sweden’s participation at Expo 2020 Dubai.
